Sitting in the waiting room at London’s University College Hospital on a Friday night, beside a daughter covered with a mysterious rash, I finished Lucy Worsley’s book on Agatha Christie. Before we get to anything else let me recommend this, with one large caveat which is that Worsley does have a habit of spoiling the plots of the books. Now maybe everyone has read all the Agatha Christie books except me – I’m definitely unusual, I think, in not having read a single one – but still, I will now never read
Just to update you, I've now read Mrs Miniver and loved it. Thanks so much for flagging it up for me. I'm now lining up Ysenda Maxwell-Graham's biography of Jan Struther.
It was very fine indeed to wake up to this message this morning. I had been listening to your pod yesterday, enjoying your conversation with Chrissy. Funny coincidence I sat through the credits for Saltburn last weekend and saw that Jan Struther had written the words (?lyrics) to Lord of All Hopefulness and thought to myself “what an interesting life”. Good to know there is a biography out there. Another one for the tbr pile.
I did vaguely know the name Mrs Miniver, but didn't really know anything about the book. Have now looked it up and will definitely seek it out. Thanks so much for the recommendation.
Ah she was fine, thank you for asking. Took anti-histamine tablets and it went away thank goodness. I haven’t read Mary Stewart - do you have a favourite of hers?
My Brother Michael or Madam Will You Talk - they're just 50s women with gumption, a more romantic spin on Helen McInnes. Might not have the same appeal if you didn't read them in your teens.
I loved this post Kate. Sorry about the long wait in A&E. Did you forget to mention Mrs Miniver by Jan Struther?

Firstly I hope your daughter is ok! Secondly, I love this post. Mary Stewart's books are definitely comfort reads for me.
